Its time to get a grip!
I’m serious. I made the mistake of looking at my Gmail account after 9:00 a.m. this morning and noticed that there are 1116 unread messages in my “Social” mailbox. Last week I recall getting a text message from Facebook stating: Your “friends” have posted 1637 updates this week and that I could reply to post my own “status”.
Well I honor my friendships and appreciate my “free” email and social media “status”. But the problem is that I simply don’t have the time (or interest for that matter) to read all 1116 Gmail social messages or many of the posted Facebook updates either.
And on top of all that, none of my devices makes doing that any easier for me, at least without another major commitment of my time for building a system of filters that permits me to decide who is and who is not important today.
I know that this makes me seem like a selfish bastard!
Come on. If any of you have the time to attend to all the “important” updates and info from your friends and social contacts, then more power to you.
I don’t. At least I can’t attend to very much of it and still earn a living, get real face time with my family and community friends, sleep some, maybe watch some sports or a movie, and lead life as I believe most of you do.
If you have an answer or suggestion, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your suggestions of how I can improve my availablility to the demands of social media in 2013.
