Encryption is the primary means of protecting personal and sensitive data. Whether it is permissible in a “free society” to permit criminals, cyber criminals or terrorists to do the same is an issue that MUST be resolved and SOON.
A number of options are available, although privacy advocates will probably push back at inclusion and exclusion issues. If a registry or third-party validation agency is the best we can do, we’ll have to make serious decisions about who will run it. And in the tech world, the “open source” vs. proprietary forces will most certainly be at work.
