Pwned and pwnage have become real English language words. I’m not kidding. Obviously, if you are a “gamer” you already have come in contact with pwned and pwnage. But if you are not, then the level of your literacy or education will certainly create some confusion- if not for you, most certainly for me.
“It can be pronounced as “owned” or as “poned”, with both pronunciations being correct. In some cases, you will even hear it pronounced as “pawned”. “Pwned” means “to be controlled against your will”, or “to be defeated by a superior power”. You might also hear the expression, “pwnage”, which is the noun version of “being pwned” “. (from about.com)
And if you think that technology exerts only a small influence over language, culture and society, think again. Don’t get me started on the close connection with pawned.
Our lack of concern for privacy and the current infatuation with transparency has brought us to a point where many traditionally accepted norms and disciplines are being turned on their head. And in my humble opinion, its not getting better.
