Sounds scary and daunting, doesn’t it. But how do we develop online services so that Health Information Technology (HIT) is integrated to the point where all emergency personnel, health care providers, pharmacies, and patients themselves can be treated more effectively? Even though paper records are still the standard method among many providers, the need to extend these information silos horizontally across the industry is imperative if we are to further reduce costs and improve efficiency and quality of care. And that automation requires that each provider adopt industry electronic record methods that interconnect them with the medical services supply chain – insurance exchanges and providers, medical device vendors, pharmacies and drug suppliers, hospitals and emergency care centers, EMT providers, and patients themselves.
But the movement is still controversial and will continue to be so until security and identity protection systems improve.
