“Software is the new hardware, and the data center is quickly becoming software-defined. Networks, storage, compute, power management- things that used to require cables and screwdrivers to configure are now controlled with a few lines of code. This mindset extends outside the data center in the form of the Internet of Everything. Simple mechanical hardware products that used to be common in our homes like thermostats, door locks, and even light bulbs are becoming software defined. We’re still in the very early days for IoE, and starting to see the adoption of true hybrid application mindsets across development teams.”
This is very timely given Cisco’s historical reliance upon a hardware platform for it revenue. But Cisco is smart and agile with acquisitions having become a major component of its strategy.
