The linked article doesn’t implicate social media in its description of the callous and shortsighted handling of a commencement speaker at Haverford College this month.
But I am – implicating social media and the continuing development of instant communication which encourages senseless and impulsive reactions to just about anything. There was a time when media “controls” slowed the dissemination of information and also provided some pause from impulsiveness. These are controls which fostered deliberation and, probably some discussion, are no longer operating as well in the instant, social flap of the likes of Facebook and Twitter.
