In “The Beat Goes On” department, I’ve now heard everything.  We of the security and privacy ilk have been shouting to the rooftops about Don’t Track and Internet Privacy and now academia is irritated that social media sites (who leverage their IP to make money by the way) don’t want to share their research data.  Of course we all want to understand what’s happening under the hood, but there’s got to be a better payoff to the Googles and Facebooks of the world than published research, especially when important secrets like Google’s sacred algorithms are at stake.  Just imagine what would happen if academia wanted the Coca Cola formula to disprove rumors that it contains traces of an illegal substance. I’m sure the response would be polite but non-compliant – to everybody.
