We have a saying around the house that if you need a Phillips screwdriver, you will find five flat headed ones. This from a home where there is a garage and there are tool boxes and organizers. But after living somewhere for awhile you will probably accumulate more and more tools and then need toolboxes and organizers.
Hang on. I am going somewhere with this.
Now that we have apps and multi-screen the smartphone “toolbox” is becoming too full, especially when illegally looking for apps while driving. Back at the beginning of the Blackberry era, one screen was enough for everything you might need to do. One for email, another for contacts, messages, settings, etc. But now we have millions of apps, each with its own unique gadget.
How could any sane human being keep track of them? I sure can’t and I am pretty sure I am human.
What to do?
The possibilities are steeped in history. File cabinets, file folders, shoe boxes, little colorful plastic bins or wicker baskets (my wife loves these). This was how we once tackled the duplication, clutter, and organizational problem. Today its defined by screen real estate and OS/memory constraints. So far, the OS and memory are winning, at least on iPhone and Android devices. I now spend more time looking for the gadget than I do using the app.
And if you think I am crazy, just visit the neighborhood coffee shop some day and watch all those smartphone users dragging their fingers across the screens, looking for their “screwdrivers”.
The Beat Goes On!
